On May 15th, Hello Waffle released their latest eyeshadow collection: Greek Gods & Goddesses
This new collection features gorgeous label art by Lena and differs from the brand's other eyeshadow collections in that they contain color-shifting pigments. What this means that depending on the lighting and angle, the colors of these shades can change. This seemed really cool, so once the collection was live, I went a bought the entire full-sized Greek Gods & Goddesses collection.
I placed an order for the new collection, as well as the new WaffleBalm on May 15th. I received a tracking number on May 25th and the order was delivered on June 2nd. It took a little over 2 weeks to receive my order from the time of purchase.
Packaging
The order was mailed in a bubble mailer and everything was secured neatly in a striped paper bag. I was surprised when I opened the package to see that a few full-sized shadows from the Duchess eyeshadow collection was thrown in along with the GWP shadows. That was really nice of Christine (the owner).
Just for full disclosure: I was commissioned to produce the artwork for both the Alternate Universe & the Duchess eyeshadow collections for Hello Waffle.
I believe there was mistake with the two GWP shadows in my order, since one was supposed to be The Obsidian Butterfly. But they're GWPs, so I didn't really mind the duplicate of The Black Sun. This might irk some people though, so if this happens, I recommend that they shoot an email over to the owner first.
First off, the label art for the new collection is gorgeous. It's colorful and full of detail, each fitting the Greek entity it represents. I did wish Ares was depicted a little differently though since the helmet reminds me more of Athena and her golden helmet rather than Ares. With Ares, I think an image of carnage and a man fitting for Aphrodite would've been much better. XD
And my god..... I wished my fiance looked like Poseidon. In fact, every man should just look like Poseidon. XD
ANYWAY.
Tools of the Trade
For this swatch fest, I used UD's Good Karma shadow brush that came with my Naked palette!
Swatches & Reviews
Note: All swatches have been made over UDPP (left) and UDPP & Darling Girl's Glitter Glue ("GG") (right) in a patting motion.
Goddess of Love (Aphrodite)
Site Description: Pale dusty pink with silver to green to blue shift.
My Take: On UDPP, the shade is an opaque pale - almost matte - pink with aqua sparks. When swatched over GG, it becomes a deeper pink with an aqua/light blue shift and a satin finish. The base itself occasionally casts a white sheen depending on the lighting.
Of the Glinting Helmet (Ares)
Site Description: Dark helmet green with red to orange to pink shift.
My Take: Over UDPP, the shadow is a sheer shimmery mossy green with pink and gold sparks. When used over GG, the green deepens and has a bright pinkish-gold shift. It's a pretty shade and is one of the more sparkly shadows of the collection.
The Renowned Artificer (Hephaestus)
Site Description: A shimmering golden tan with green to red shift.
My Take: Over UDPP, it's a shimmery pale gold with green and pink sparks. Like Goddess of Love, it takes on a satin finish over GG and the color deepens. Depending on the angle and the lighting, it can change to a reddish-gold. The change is very subtle; I actually spent a minute or so swinging my arm side to side in front of me to even see the shift.
Bringer of Storms (Zeus)
Site Description: Stormy purple with a barrage of green to blue shift.
My Take: Over UDPP, this is a beautiful shimmery eggplant purple with shifting blue and green sparks. When used over GG, this shade really transforms and the the blue and green shift takes center stage. Depending on the angle the light hits the shade, the blue shift can change to a green shift over the purple base.

Light of the Sun (Apollo)
Site Description: Intense metallic gold with a subtle red to blue shift and an explosion of blue and golden green sparkle.
My Take: Over UDPP, the shadow is a lovely gold with a lot of aqua and white sparks. This is the most sparkly of the collection and if you're not careful, you might get glitter everywhere. Upon GG, the shade explodes into a sparkly metallic gold. It looks absolutely gorgeous if you pair it with Savior or Sailors.
Savior of Sailors (Poseidon)
Site Description: Glowing sapphire with turquoise to blue to violet shift.
My Take: Over UDPP, the shade is a blackened blue shadow with scattered blue sparks. When swatched over GG, the blue becomes much more prominent in the base and you can see purple and blue sparks. It's a really gorgeous blue that reminds me of the deep sea. In addition, depending on how the light hits the shade, the blue base can change slightly to show a hint of dark violet.
Of the Wildland (Artemis)
Site Description: Light lilac with pink to blue shift and a twinkling of pink and purple shimmer.
My Take: Upon UDPP, it's a pale lilac with pink and blue sparks. When applied over GG, this transforms. It becomes a medium lavender where the pink sparks are a bit more prominent. When the light hits the shadow, there is a hint of a blue shift.
The Unseen (Hades)
Site Description: An inconspicuous brown with silver-green to silver-red to green-gold shift. Some sparkle.
My Take: On UDPP, you get a brownish-purple with pink sparks. It doesn't really transform as much over GG except that it has more of a satin finish and a pink shift. However, depending on the angle and, the shade can change completely to a dark brown base with a green shift.

Guide into the Underworld (Hermes)
Site Description: Dark orange with red to gold to bronze shift.
My Take: On UDPP, it's a bright burnt orange with pink yellow sparks. Of all the shades in this collection, I found that this didn't change much over GG. It just gets a tad deeper in color. However, depending on the lighting, the shadow can change slightly to a bright golden orange.
The Black Sun (GWP)
FB Description: Blackened metallic golden brown with green/gold sparks
My Take: Over UDPP, it's a antique golden brown with gold sparks. Over GG, the gold pops out a lot as the brown settles to the background. It's a pretty shade that just transforms nicely over a sticky base. Depending on if you want to use this as a crease shade or a lid shade, it's a pretty versatile shade.

Overall Thoughts
The new collection features Hello Waffle's new eyeshadow formula. The application of this collection was very smooth and even and the colors are pretty opaque, even with the lighter shades. They all also seem to transform over a sticky base, with some looking pretty different from when it was just swatched on UDPP (ex. Of the Wildland). This allows for more versatile uses of the shadows for different looks which is definitely a plus.
Overall, it's a very interesting collection. I actually expected the shadows to change more in different lighting and angles, so I was a bit disappointed when I started swatching. Even with swatches I've seen online, I didn't see much of a difference in color and read that a lot of people didn't see any more than what was captured in pictures. However, once I started swatching my order, I realized just how complicated the shades can be.
The color changes are very subtle and the shades will appear differently due to the type of lighting and the angle you view the shadows. I'm not talking about a shade having a "blue cast" from a fluorescent bulb either. For example, The Unseen changed from a purple base to a brown base due to me moving my arm up from my leg to my eye level, while I had a lamp with a daylight bulb behind me. It isn't something that can be captured easily in a picture. As a result, I took some videos of the swatches. You can see the changes in the shadows if you're looking for it, but otherwise, it's hard to tell. When you do notice it in person however, it's pretty neat.
Of this collection, my favorites are Bringer of Storms. Of the Wildland and Savior of Sailors. My least favorite will have to be The Unseen only because application was a little patchy over UDPP.
For those interested, I do recommend that you get samples of the collection first to see if it's to your taste. This collection is a bit complex so you might want to take some time checking it out. Play around with the lighting for a bit and look at the eyeshadows at different angles. Maybe you'll be in for a surprise. :)
